A Proper Pool Opening in 5 Easy Steps

Pool Opening

You may ask why all the joy is for.  It is because it’s  pool time now! Soon, backyards across the country will be filled with the sounds of kids laughing, splashing, and playing in their pool, especially in Virginia and Maryland. But first, we must all properly open our pools so we can go swimming. The appropriate procedures for a correct pool opening will be covered in this article.

First Step: Remove the pool cover

When a pool cover is made of solid vinyl and has allowed water or debris to build up on top throughout the winter, removing the cover can occasionally be rather risky.

The best approach for dealing with solid coverings is to fully drain the water off before attempting to remove the debris. Owners of swimming pools frequently make the mistake of removing the pool cover too soon, before any extra water and debris have been drained. This might cause all of the aforementioned debris to fall into the pool. A situation like this is not good for the purity of the water and can require filtration for up to a week or longer to bring the pool back in working order.

After removing the cover, you should give it a good cleaning, let it air dry, fold it, and then store it for the hot summer in Virginia and Maryland.

Second Step: Filtering/Plumbing Systems

This stage involves reconnecting the filter system’s plugs with all of the relevant plugs. Most filter tanks only have one plug, however most pool pumps typically have at least two plugs. Including the salt chlorine generator when necessary, all unions at the filter system need to be reattached.

It’s also now that the eyes should be installed in place of the plugs in the pool’s returns. The skimmer’s plug or gadget will also be taken out.

Making sure all electrical components are turned back on is also a good idea during this stage.

Third Step: Turn on the filter system

The pool’s filter system is reactivated during this stage.

Make sure that there are no leaks and that everything is operating as it should be while the water is running through the system. Consider consulting a pool opening company in your area in this step.

Fourth Step: Cleaning Up and Vacuuming

Each opening in a pool affects the water clarity to a significant extent.

You might need to vacuum and clean the walls of pools whose bottoms are visible. In order to improve visibility for vacuuming in pools with hidden bottoms, it is preferable to brush the walls first and then wait 24 hours before attempting further cleaning.

Keep in mind that the filter normally needs to be backwashed or cleaned frequently during this process to help with clarity.

Fifth Step: Chemicals

A second round of pool shock is required to superchlorinate pools if the bottom is not visible. If there is a significant amount of algae, you should add 3 bags of chlorine shock (for those using ordinary chlorine) every 10,000 gallons.

If the algae continues, shock can be added two days in a row after consulting a pool opening company.

Add any essential pool balancing chemicals at this time, along with the basic maintenance chemicals (ie., pH, alkalinity, calcium).

For individuals who have a salt system, it should be turned on.

It is a very excellent idea to clean your cell at the start of each season if you are use salt chlorine generators. This can be done quickly and easily by adding a water/muriatic acid solution to the cell and allowing it to soak. This will remove any undesired scaling or build-up on the cell and, if present, will allow the system to generate chlorine as intended.
